Just downloaded and played around this AR Airplanes game. It’s a really cool app where you get to fly a remote control (RC) airplane. This game was developed using ARKit technology and uses the same controls that you usually found on a real RC plane’s controller.
The game isn’t anything exciting, you just control the plane and fly it around. What this little demo gave me is thinking about how amazing it will be having a multiplayer dogfight game. Just think about it, two or more players launching their airplanes into the air fighting each other in the real world space.
The thing is that you might need to play it locally because players will have to be in the same space to make it more authentic and of course to nail the planer’s positioning right. I still think that making an online multiplayer dogfighting game with ARKit game be amazing but there are hurdles that developers will need to solve before releasing such a game.
I really like that AR Airplane game because I was able to control the 3D object not on a surface, but in the air. I think that developers might be possible to make an online dogfighting game like that if the planes’ flying area is limited and connected to an area around a certain base which is attached to the ARKit’s detected surface.
For example, just look at a game like Twilight Pioneers. In Twilight Pioneers you have two dragons flying around a certain area. Now just replace those dragons with airplanes, remove the water, and put a larger open area, and you can see what I am aiming for.
I’m sure people will love an augmented reality game like that, what do you guys think?
