Today we are looking at a new Augmented Reality game called Domino World! or as it’s referred to on the App Store: Domino World AR. Domino World AR is paid ARKit game. There are tons of Dominoes mobile game for iOS but what makes this one stand out from the rest is that it’s designed from the ground up for augmented reality.
What is Domino World AR and who is it for?
Domino World AR is a Dominoes game where you lay down different types of domino pieces (tiles), props and toys and watch those tiles topple over. Dominoes was one of my favorite childhood game alongside another game that I really like called Simon.
Domino World AR makes is super easy to lay down hundreds or tiles effortlessly. The game makes it super easy to create very complex courses,
The UI is very simple and intuitive, it’s certainly a game for all ages. I am an adult yet I really enjoyed playing it and it did bring back some lovely childhood memories. I can’t wait to build something more complex but I think I’ll need a much bigger space for more crazy course ideas.
How to play Domino World AR?
Puting tiles, pros or toys is super easy. You just need to select the appropriate piece that you want to use the ‘Create’ button to create it. You can spawn many domino tiles but just holding the create button and moving the device in the direction you want to pieces to be created—it’s feel like painting with a brush, super easy!
For the props and toys, you can just create one by tapping that button and then rotate it to the direction you want it to be facing.
Another cool thing is that you don’t need to start collecting and clearing up the area, you can do that with a single tap on the “Clear” button and boom all the pieces are removed. You can also erase individual tiles, props or toys using the erase button.
Players can also move the pieces around using the move button There is also a record button which you can use to record a video and share it online.
Once you are all set and ready, you can press the start button and see the magic happening right in front of your eyes.
Domino World AR also has an AutoSave feature that automatically saves the world and you can load it later by choosing it in the home screen, really cool.
The Really Cool Features
The things that I liked most about Domino World AR is the tiles’ effects and the toys’ animations. You can choose from a large variety of cool toys and title effects that really makes the whole Dominoes’ gameplay experience so more fun and exciting. The effects are followed by really cool sound effects. For example, there are music dominoes that when they fall they make a sound of different notes There is the fireworks tile and the bomb tile, that by their name you already know what the effect is.
Keep in mind that those props and toys aren’t just for the beauty of it. Once you put them on a surface, you can connect tiles to them in some way or another. There are hotspots where you just put the cursor on and the game automatically recognizes the start position and start drawing the dominoes pieces from that place.
For example, there is a cool box with four box gloves popping out once you activate it. I connected dominoes tiles for each starting point near each hole where the boxing glove is coming out from and when I started the game, it just toppled all the lanes at the same time—it was really amazing to watch.
I think it would be amazing if there was an option to import 3D props that other people make into the game. This can be really amazing because it can open up so many more create design possibilities I also would have liked to see a co-op gameplay option where you can build a track alongside a friend. The last thing that I think would be amazing is to have an option to export and share your built Dominoes world with other people online. If those thing were in the game, it would have been so much better in my opinion.
I am not an enthusiast domino player, but It think players would have liked to also be able to see how many domino tiles they put on the table. There is certainly room for some cool extra features here in my opinion.
AR Experience
Domino World! AR is an ARKit augmented reality game. The game didn’t take long to detect a surface on a table in my living room in a well-lit area. That being said, it didn’t always work perfectly and it has some jittering.
I think that the jittering occurred because maybe I was too close. So it’s better just to move back a bit and let the game pick up the entire area of the table. Also when you start playing, it’s better to keep a good distance, don’t be too close because the game can just snatch out of place even after you put the tiles on the surface or when you spawn on toys, props or tiles.
Conclusion
Dominoes is probably one of the really fun physical game that translates really well in augmented reality. You don’t need to make a mass in the house, their is no mass in collecting all the tiles and you can create some stunning tracks without buying experience props to design your dream track.
A really fun for any domino fan and a great AR game that I’m positive that many kids will love. Parents won’t need to clean up the mass after them, it’s a really both kid-friendly and parent-friendly game 🙂
